The most common marital advice you’ll ever receive is that communication is the key to a successful marriage. I cannot agree with this statement enough; however, I do have a confession. When it comes to finances, I shut down completely. I don’t want to talk about it, at all with my husband. This is tough for me to admit, because I pride myself on a strong ability to manage money. Unfortunately, that ability is limited to MY money only.
When it comes to managing money, my husband and I are much more like roommates than spouses. He has his bills, I have mine. We pay for our own half of vacations no different from how I would plan a vacation with my best girlfriend. My husband tries to bring the topic of re-structuring our finances up at times, but I get severe anxiety and the discussion always ends in an argument. For years, the reason I decided not to merge our finances was to avoid arguments. You see, my husband and I are complete opposites when it comes to how we view money. I view money as an extra sense of security. After bills, the majority of my money is either saved or used to become debt free. My husband on the other hand views money as a sense of freedom & joy. He loves to travel, so his extra funds are primarily used on vacations and designer apparel. Long story short; I’m a saver and he’s a spender.
Over the years, we have both started to rub off on each other. I am starting to see the value in treating myself and he is understanding that being debt free opens up a whole new sense of freedom. BUT, I still have trouble discussing the topic of merging our money!

It felt good to hear that there is no “right” way to manage money in your marriage, but after listening to the episode I realize my closing off the lines of communication (as it relates to finances) in my marriage is just unfair to my husband.
